Reproductive health in humanitarian assistance.
A literature review

by Annika O Esscher

The Centre for Public Health in Humanitarian Assistance [PHHA] was established at the end of 2001, by Uppsala University, in response to clearly recognized needs and demands in Sweden for training, technical advice, research and a resource centre in this specialized area.

Disaster affected populations, refugees and displaced persons are amongst the most disadvantaged in the world.  They are often dependent on humanitarian assistance for their survival.  Globally, humanitarian crises are growing in scale and complexity.   Most disasters have multiple impacts affecting different sectors and therefore require a multi-sectoral and multi-disciplinary response. The newly established Centre for Public Health in Humanitarian Assistance [PHHA] at Uppsala University is linking with other disciplines that do not normally sit together, particularly those of public health and nutrition, economics, disaster management, peace and conflict studies, culture and anthropology and trans-cultural psychiatry. While the main focus of the Centre is on Public Health in Humanitarian Assistance, it will link very closely with these other disciplines to facilitate a multi-disciplinary approach to disaster related studies.

The Centre is situated in International Maternal and Child Health -  IMCH, Department of Women's and Children's Health, Uppsala University
