SWEDESD established at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy
2021-01-19
SWEDESD has moved from the Faculty of Educational Sciences to the Department of Women's and Children's Health at Uppsala University. This reorganization will give the center better opportunities to manage as well as strengthen the university's education and research within global health with the competence in transformative learning.
As of January, 1 2021, SWEDESD is a part of the Department of Women's and Children's Health (KBH). The center will initially be established for four years and an evaluation will take place after year three (2023). As this reorganization is proceeding, the center will change its name to “SWEDESD - Center for Research and Education on Learning for Sustainable Development”.
The decision to dismantle SWEDESD at the Faculty of Educational Sciences was taken by the Vice-Chancellor on December, 1 2020, to enable the move to the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. The decision was preceded by an internal analysis of the organizational position of SWEDESD on behalf of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy.
SWEDESD will continue their mission to contribute to new knowledge as well as expand transformative learning for sustainable development. This includes educating students at both an undergraduate and an advanced level, and not the least to develop the competence for the teachers and researchers at Uppsala university. The new allocation also means that SWEDESD can develop and strengthen the emerging education and research environment in global health at Uppsala University.

- We are really looking forward to our new role and to working together with our new colleagues, for instance on the new established Master's Programme in Implementation, Transformative Learning and Sustainability. Over the years, we have developed a learning environment with a focus on interdisciplinary creation of knowledge about learning and complex sustainability challenges. We believe this can be an asset in the field of global health, says Eva Friman, director and researcher at SWEDESD.
Mats Målqvist, professor in global health at the Department of Women's and Children's Health and one of the initiators of SWEDESD's new position.

- Within global health, Agenda 2030 is central and as SWEDESD moves to the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine, an exciting interdisciplinary research environment will be created that goes in line with the development of the subject. SWEDESD will also be a great resource for incorporating global health and a sustainability perspective within the Disciplinary Domain’s educational programmes, for instance in the development of the new six-year medical programme.
